The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is the largest and most well-known governing body in college sports. Member institutions are split into three distinct divisions:
NCAA Division 1 (D1)
The highest level of collegiate competition in the US. Many Division 1 universities feature large stadiums, national television exposure, the Power Five conferences (and FBS/FCS football), and the largest athletic scholarship budgets.
NCAA Division 2 (D2)
Highly competitive sports paired with a strong academic balance. D2 sports offer excellent athletic scholarships and high-performance training environments.
NCAA Division 3 (D3)
High academic standards combined with passionate competition. Important note: NCAA D3 institutions do not offer athletic scholarships by rule. However, they often provide significant merit-based academic financial aid.

The NAIA is an independent governing body made up primarily of smaller, private universities.
The athletic level
Although the NAIA consists mainly of smaller private universities, the athletic level is often underestimated. Many top NAIA teams regularly compete with NCAA Division II programs, while some of the strongest programs are capable of competing with NCAA Division I teams.

The NJCAA is the governing body for two-year Community Colleges (Junior Colleges).

Highly competitive, especially in NJCAA Division 1, where full athletic scholarships are regularly awarded.
The pathway
Junior Colleges are also a popular pathway for international athletes who want to improve academically, develop physically or gain additional exposure before transferring to a four-year university. After completing your two-year Associate Degree, you transfer directly into year three at an NCAA D1, D2, D3, or NAIA university with two years of athletic eligibility remaining.
