What to expect from college life in the United States

College life in America is very different from what many international students are used to. Below you’ll find some of the biggest differences.

An American university campus feels like a small community where almost everything is within walking distance. Besides classrooms and state-of-the-art athletic facilities, you’ll find residence halls, dining halls, libraries, study spaces, coffee shops, and recreational areas.

Especially during your first year, you’ll spend most of your time on campus. It’s a safe environment where it’s easy to meet new people and quickly become part of the university community.

Frequently asked questions about college life in America

Is it difficult to make friends as an international student-athlete?
Not at all. One of the biggest advantages of being a student-athlete is that you're part of a team from day one. Your teammates quickly become your closest friends, making it much easier to settle into campus life and build a social network.
How do student-athletes balance sports and academics?
American universities put a lot of effort into helping student-athletes succeed both academically and athletically. Coaches, professors, and academic advisors work together to help you balance your schedule, and many universities offer tutoring, study halls, and academic support whenever it's needed.
How is college life in America different from student life in my home country?
One of the biggest differences is that most students live, study, and play sports on the same campus. Instead of traveling between your home, university, and sports club, almost everything happens in one place. This creates a strong sense of community and school pride that is unique to American college life.
What if I struggle academically?
Fortunately, this doesn't happen very often. Universities invest a great deal in their student-athletes and want them to succeed both on the field and in the classroom. You'll receive support from academic advisors, have access to tutoring if needed, and, at many schools, participate in supervised study hall sessions to help you stay academically eligible.
