College sports divisions and levels at a glance

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is the largest and most well-known governing body in college sports. Member institutions are split into three distinct divisions:
NCAA Division 1 (D1)
The highest level of collegiate competition in the US. Many Division 1 universities feature large stadiums, national television exposure, the Power Five conferences (and FBS/FCS football), and the largest athletic scholarship budgets.
NCAA Division 2 (D2)
Highly competitive sports paired with a strong academic balance. D2 sports offer excellent athletic scholarships and high-performance training environments.
NCAA Division 3 (D3)
High academic standards combined with passionate competition. Important note: NCAA D3 institutions do not offer athletic scholarships by rule. However, they often provide significant merit-based academic financial aid.
Unsure about D1 vs D2 or D2 vs D3? Made Scholarships helps you understand the athletic and academic realities of each level.
The NAIA is an independent governing body made up primarily of smaller, private universities.
The athletic level
Although the NAIA consists mainly of smaller private universities, the athletic level is often underestimated. Many top NAIA teams regularly compete with NCAA Division II programs, while some of the strongest programs are capable of competing with NCAA Division I teams.
The advantages
The NAIA features streamlined eligibility rules and flexible athletic scholarship allocation. This makes the NAIA an attractive option for international student-athletes seeking top facilities on a personal, close-knit campus.
The NJCAA is the governing body for two-year Community Colleges (Junior Colleges).
The athletic level
Highly competitive, especially in NJCAA Division 1, where full athletic scholarships are regularly awarded.
The pathway
Junior Colleges are also a popular pathway for international athletes who want to improve academically, develop physically or gain additional exposure before transferring to a four-year university. After completing your two-year Associate Degree, you transfer directly into year three at an NCAA D1, D2, D3, or NAIA university with two years of athletic eligibility remaining.
The goal isn’t simply to land in NCAA Division 1 at all costs; it’s about finding the school that best fits your athletic capability, academic profile, and financial budget. Because top teams across NCAA D2, NAIA, and NJCAA often compete at a similar level, Made Scholarships evaluates the complete picture. There is no universal “best” division. The best choice depends entirely on your individual goals.
We look for a complete match across all pillars: sports, academics, and finances. Equally important is the human side: Do you click with the head coach? Do you fit the team culture? Will the campus help you grow as an individual? When all those factors align, we’ve found your ideal destination in the US.
