College volleyball in the USA

In the world of sports, records are made to be broken. Last month, a volleyball record was broken by the University of Nebraska, Lincoln Volleyball program.

Records

The women’s volleyball team broke the world record for the largest attendance ever at a women’s sporting event. A total of 92,003 fans attended the volleyball game against Omaha packed into the university’s football stadium. The previous world record for women’s sports attendance was 91,648 set at a soccer game in the spring of 2022 in Barcelona Spain.

The previous U.S. record was set at the Rose Bowl in 1999 when 90,185 people saw the U.S. defeat China in the Women’s World Cup final. The NCAA college volleyball record for attendance was also crushed. The previous record—set in the national championship match in 2021—was 18,755 people.

Nebraska Volleyball

It’s no surprise that fans turned out in record numbers. The women’s volleyball team usually plays its home games at a facility with a maximum capacity of just over 13,000. Since 2013, the Huskers have held the top spot for attendance among all NCAA volleyball teams, selling out 306 consecutive regular-season matches.

The Huskers have also drawn eight of the nine largest crowds ever recorded in NCAA volleyball history. In addition, all Nebraska students were given the day off from classes. The fact that the opponent, the University of Nebraska at Omaha, is located about 60 miles away also helped. This, together with the additional bleacher and field seating for the event, helped create space for the largest crowd in the 100-year history of Memorial Stadium.

Impact

The Nebraska Volleyball’s feat of attracting 92,003 spectators goes beyond the numbers. It’s a defining moment in the journey of a program that continues to redefine the boundaries of what is possible in the world of collegiate athletics. It’s a testament to the growing recognition and support for women’s sports, proving that female athletes can captivate audiences and create a sense of community and pride, just as their male counterparts do. It sends a powerful message that women’s sports deserve the same level of attention and appreciation.
