    Personal Information

Silke te Velthuis was born on April 7, 2009, as the middle child in a family of six. From an early age, she showed strong academic curiosity and motivation, participating in several advanced extracurricular programs during elementary school.

At the age of 12, Silke moved with her family from the Netherlands to Bonaire, a small Caribbean island off the coast of Venezuela. There, she continued her education at the VWO (pre-university) level while also becoming actively involved in the Junior Ranger program, where she developed a strong appreciation for nature, environmental conservation, and teamwork.

After returning to the Netherlands at age 15, Silke enrolled in the Pre-University Program through the Leiden University Honours Academy, further developing her academic interests in an advanced learning environment. Her interest in science, particularly physics, led to her participation in the CERN-Solvay Student Camp in April 2026, where she joined students from around the world for an immersive international STEM experience.

Academically, Silke has a 4.0 GPA and achieved a composite score of 34 on the ACT, including scores of 35 in English and Science and 36 in Reading. She has also achieved Cambridge English C2 proficiency, demonstrating an advanced level of English.

Silke is expected to graduate from secondary school in June 2027. Alongside her academic ambitions, she has rapidly developed as a competitive rower and is highly motivated to continue combining her academic and athletic goals at the collegiate level in the United States.

    Athletic Information

Silke discovered rowing in October 2024, after returning to the Netherlands. She immediately developed a passion for the sport and progressed rapidly in both training and competition. After only six months of rowing, she joined the competitive team in May 2025. During the remainder of her first season, she won all of her races in the single scull (1x). In her first major boat competition, she won the U16 double scull (2x) in a course-record time.

During the 2025–26 season, Silke continued to compete across multiple boat classes, including the 1x, 2x, 4-, 4x, and 8+. At the Dutch Ergometer National Championships in December 2025, in her first official 2k ergometer test, she placed third with a time of 7:22. She continued to improve throughout the season and subsequently lowered her 2k ergometer time to 7:16.

Silke's progress continued at the national level. At the Voorjaarsregatta, she qualified for the Dutch Small Boat National Championships and finished sixth in the U18 1x, while also finishing first among first-year rowers in her age category.

She subsequently had a strong summer racing season. Silke finished first in the 4x at the ARB and went on to become Dutch U19 Champion in the 4x at the Raceroei (Dutch Large Boat Championships). She also finished third in the 8+ at the same event. At the DIYR, she finished second in the 4- and first in the mixed 2x.

Her performances earned her selection for the Coupe de la Jeunesse, where she competed internationally in both the mixed 8+ and Junior Women's 8+. She finished fourth in the mixed 8+ and recorded fourth- and third-place finishes in the Junior Women's 8+ over the two days of racing. In the JW8+, Silke rowed at stroke, while she rowed at bow in the mixed 8+.

What stands out most about Silke is the speed of her development. Having started rowing only in October 2024, she has progressed from a newcomer to a Dutch national champion and international-level junior rower in a remarkably short period of time. She combines strong athletic ability with a high level of competitiveness, a willingness to learn, and a genuine passion for the sport. Silke is excited to continue developing and is highly motivated to compete at the collegiate level in the United States.
