    Personal Information

Silke te Velthuis was born on April 7, 2009, as the middle child in a family of six. From an early age, she showed strong academic curiosity and motivation, participating in several advanced extracurricular programs during elementary school.

At the age of 12, Silke moved with her family from the Netherlands to Bonaire, a small Caribbean island off the coast of Venezuela. There, she continued her education at the VWO (pre-university) level while also becoming actively involved in the Junior Ranger program, where she developed a strong appreciation for nature, environmental conservation, and teamwork.

Silke’s athletic background is both diverse and impressive. From a young age, she has been passionate about sports and has competed in several disciplines at a high level. At the age of five, she started practicing judo and field hockey, building a strong athletic foundation early on.

While living on Bonaire, Silke expanded her athletic experience by competing in track & field and windsurfing. In windsurfing, she achieved an impressive second-place finish at a World Cup event, demonstrating both competitive drive and adaptability across sports.

After returning to the Netherlands at age 15, Silke enrolled in the Pre-University Program through the Leiden University Honours Academy, further developing her academic interests and challenging herself in an advanced learning environment.

Her passion for science, particularly physics, led to her selection for the prestigious CERN-Solvay Student Camp in April 2026, where she joined students from around the world for an immersive STEM experience focused on physics, innovation, and international collaboration.

Silke is expected to graduate from secondary school in June 2027. She is currently preparing to take the ACT and TOEFL examinations in the summer of 2026 as part of her college recruitment and admissions process.

Alongside her academic ambitions, Silke has rapidly developed as a competitive rower and is highly motivated to pursue both athletics and academics at the collegiate level in the United States.

    Athletic Information

Silke discovered rowing in October 2024. She immediately developed a passion for the sport and progressed rapidly in both training volume and performance. Within only six months, she earned a place on the competitive team at her club in May 2025.

During the remainder of her first rowing season, Silke won every race she entered in the single scull (1x). In her first major team boat competition, she won the U16 double scull (2x) in a course-record time.

As her development accelerated, Silke began racing in multiple boat classes, including the 1x, 2x, 4+, 4x, and 8+. At the Dutch Ergometer National Championships in December 2025, she placed third with a highly competitive 2k ergometer time of 7:22 — an especially impressive result considering how recently she had started rowing.

She continued her strong progression throughout the 2026 season. At the Heineken Roeivierkamp, competing in an 8+, her crew finished second in every distance raced. Shortly afterward, she improved her 2k ergometer score to 7:16 and qualified for the Dutch Small Boat National Championships at the Voorjaarsregatta.

At the national championships, Silke finished 6th overall in the U18 single scull (1x) category and was the highest-ranked first-year rower in her age group.

What stands out most about Silke is the speed of her development, her enthusiasm for competition, and her commitment to continuous improvement. She has embraced every aspect of rowing — from training and racing to the friendships and experiences that come with the sport — and is highly motivated to continue developing both athletically and academically at the collegiate level in the United States.
