Personal and Academic Information

Thijs is a 17 years old boy who grew up in Utrecht, The Netherlands. He is an optimistic, enthusiastic and social person who works hard to achieve his personal goals. Besides tennis, Thijs played soccer on a high level until he was 14. Furthermore he likes to ski and spend time with his friends and family.

In addition to his athletic abilities Thijs is also an outstanding student. He achieved the highest possible score at the end of primary school to determine the level of high school to attend. Now he is a senior in high school at the highest level of education in The Netherlands (Gymnasium) and he is expected to graduate in June 2016. Thijs achieved a comined score of 1170 (CR+M) on his SAT and a 97 on his TOEFL 

Thijs is very passionate about College Tennis in the USA, because this will allow him to work on his tennis qualities, educational level and personal development.


Athletic Information

Thijs started playing tennis at the age of 6. At the age of 14 he decided to go train at the Bogtstra-Kempers Tennis Academy (Bogtstra is a former Davis Cup Captain of the Netherlands, Kempers is a former international top doubles player). As a result of practicing with top junior players Thijs has improved his game significantly the last years and in 2014 he won the Central Netherlands District Championship under 16. He is currently ranked 247 in the Dutch national open men's ranking.

Thijs is a tall (6'4 ft) right-handed very consistent baseline player, who waits for the right moment to play aggressive with his forehand. In addition to this he is very strong mentally, persistent, focused and never gives up. 


Thijs practices 10 hours a week on the court and in addition he does cardio. Thijs is very eager to learn and is constantly working on further improving his game.


Coach Tom Kempers has the following to say about Thijs:


“Thijs is a very hard worker with very good groundstrokes. We are currently working on his serve in order to win more free points. We as a coaching staff think that Thijs has a lot of potential and more room to grow to an even higher level. He’s easy going and an example of how one should work on and off court”
