Sumaya began her soccer journey with SC Buitenveldert as a right and left forward at the age of eight. From the age of 12 she started to play in a boy's team as a defender, marking her first experience in this role and gaining valuable training at Balcontrole, a soccer school where she played in tournaments against professional clubs. She became known for her speed and played a key role in strong teams that won championships in both the girls' premier league and the boys' second division. During this time, she also trained with the Born to Play program, joining additional sessions with boys to further improve her skills. In addition, she was selected for the regional team (Utrecht) of the KNVB, competing with other top young players.
Over two years, she competed with the boys in both the first and premier leagues before returning to the highest girls team, which also competed in the boys' league. She later joined the first team of Swift U-20, where she helped secure the first division championship and promotion to the premier league. Currently, she is a central defender for the first under 20 team at SC Buitenveldert.
Sumaya is a versatie and strong central defender with good technical ability, cultivated from playing in various positions and competitive environments. Known for her speed, she excels in both offensive and defensive plays, displaying agility that allows her to cover the field efficiently. Her extensive experience playing with boys' teams has developed her physicality and resilience, enabling her to compete with strength and confidence. Her time with specialized training programs like Born to Play and Balcontrole has reinforced her tactical awareness and technical foundation, making her an asset in high-stakes matches. Additionally, her championship history in mixed-gender competitions demonstrates her ability to adapt, lead, and consistently contribute to her teams’ successes, while her current role as a central defender showcases her defensive skills and positional versatility.
