What is the NCAA Eligibility Center?<\/h2>\r\nThe NCAA Eligibility Center, formerly known as the NCAA Clearinghouse, assesses whether prospective student-athletes meet the academic and amateurism requirements of the NCAA<\/a>. Without its clearance you cannot compete in Division I or Division II, however good you are and however much a coach wants you.\r\n\r\nYou register yourself through the Eligibility Center's online portal<\/a>, where you upload your transcripts, proof of graduation and details of your sports history. A certification account carries a fee; the current amount is listed on the Eligibility Center site.\r\n

What does the Eligibility Center assess?<\/h2>\r\n

Academic eligibility<\/h3>\r\nThe centre looks at the courses you took in high school, your grades, your core-course GPA<\/a>, your transcripts and your proof of graduation. Not every subject counts: only NCAA-approved core courses<\/em> do.\r\n\r\nFor international athletes, your grades are converted to the American system. Amateurism status<\/h3>\r\nTo compete in the NCAA you must be an amateur. The centre reviews whether you have been paid for your sport, whether you have been under contract with a professional club and whether you have earned prize money. For European athletes this deserves attention: playing in a professional club's youth academy need not be a problem, but a player contract or an expense allowance above the permitted limit can be.\r\n

The final decision<\/h3>\r\nBased on both assessments, the Eligibility Center determines whether you are eligible. That outcome is binding and carries weight in the recruitment process<\/a>: coaches base their scholarship offers partly on it.\r\n
