IELTS stands for International English Language Testing System. It is an English language proficiency test developed and delivered by the British Council, IDP and Cambridge.

The test measures your ability to use English in an academic or general setting and is accepted by universities and colleges around the world, including many institutions in the United States.

For university admission, you will generally need the IELTS Academic test. It assesses four English language skills in listening, reading, writing & speaking. The IELTS Academic test takes around 2 hours and 45 minutes. Each section is scored from 0 to 9, and your overall IELTS score is calculated from the average of the four section scores.

If you are planning to study at an American university or college, make sure you check which version of IELTS your school accepts before booking your test.

An IELTS score is not a requirement for receiving an athletic scholarship. Athletic scholarships are awarded by universities, not by the NCAA, NAIA or NJCAA. The NCAA Eligibility Center also does not require an English language test simply to determine whether an international student-athlete is academically eligible to compete.

The important distinction is that you still need to meet the English language requirements for admission set by your university. Your admissions department determines whether you need IELTS, TOEFL, Duolingo or another accepted test and what score you need.

There is no single IELTS score that guarantees a scholarship in the United States. The required score depends on the university and, in some cases, the academic program. Many universities require an overall IELTS score of around 6.0 or 6.5, while more selective universities may require 7.0 or higher. Some universities also set minimum scores for individual sections.

The table below gives a general indication. These are only general guidelines, so always check the requirements of the universities on your shortlist.

What is the IELTS exam?
