Because most coaches do not have the opportunity to evaluate you live in person, a high-quality, well-structured highlight video is essential.
Coaches receive hundreds of profiles per week and rarely watch videos from beginning to end. They initially scan through the footage and decide within ten to fifteen seconds whether to keep watching or move on to the next candidate.
Below is our complete step-by-step guide from A to Z to create a video that immediately grabs attention.

The ideal structure and length of a recruiting video

A common mistake is submitting a video that is either far too long or overly brief. While many general internet sources suggest short clips of 3 to 5 minutes, our experience proves that the ideal length for international student-athletes is between 7 and 10 minutes.

US coaches require a comprehensive and reliable overview of your athletic ability. This primarily includes match play, complemented by a few minutes of targeted training drills.

A strong recruiting video is structured as follows:

  1. Title Card & Introduction (0:00 - 0:45): Start with a stationary title slide displaying your name, birth year, sport/position, graduation year, height, and GPA (learn how to calculate your US GPA). Immediately follow this with a brief (20 to 30 second) personal introduction on camera in English. This gives the coach an immediate sense of your personality and a clear impression of your English proficiency.

  2. Match Highlights & Gameplay (4 - 6 minutes): Lead directly with your absolute best plays from competitive matches. Feature your decision-making under pressure, spatial awareness, athletic ability, and position-specific qualities. Do not save your best clips for the end; ensure your strongest highlights appear within the first minute.

  3. Training & Skill Footage (3 - 4 minutes): Conclude with targeted training drills and exercises. Coaches want to evaluate your core mechanics, footwork, ball control, or physical condition. This also allows you to emphasize your specific strengths outside of match pressure.

    6 Practical filming tips

You do not need an expensive camera crew to capture quality footage. Current-generation smartphones have excellent cameras and work great. Keep the following guidelines in mind:
