Can you lose your athletic scholarship in America? Everything you need to know as a student-athlete

One of the most frequent questions we receive from athletes and parents during an initial consultation is: "Can a college coach take away your scholarship mid-season if you play a few bad games or get injured?" The short and reassuring answer is: no. An American university invests tens of thousands of dollars into you as an athlete. Revoking a scholarship involves a complex administrative and legal process that a school does not initiate lightly. However, an athletic scholarship is not free money—it is a formal contract with mutual obligations. To eliminate any uncertainty, we have outlined the core rules, your rights as an athlete, and practical scenarios below. This ensures you know exactly where you stand and how we support you if challenges ever arise on campus.

How secure is an athletic scholarship?

Many people assume an American college coach can pull a scholarship at any given moment after a poor athletic performance. Under athletic association regulations, this is simply not allowed.

An athletic scholarship is typically awarded for the duration of one academic year (and at some major Division 1 programs, multi-year contracts are offered). During that active contract period, a university cannot reduce or cancel your financial aid based on athletic performance or results on the field.

At the end of the season, every athlete attends an evaluation with the coaching staff. As long as you give 100% effort in practices and games, maintain your academic eligibility, and adhere to campus rules, annual scholarship renewal is a standard formality in 95% of cases.

When is your athletic scholarship actually at risk?

While rare in practice, there are specific situations where a coach or university has the right not to renew or to immediately terminate an athletic scholarship.

Misconduct within the team and disrespect toward coaching staff

A key condition of your athletic scholarship is maintaining a professional work ethic and attitude. A coach can choose not to renew your contract at the end of the academic year for:

  • Unexcused absences or chronic lateness: Missing practices, team meetings, strength workouts, or the team bus without a valid reason.
  • Lack of effort and poor attitude: Showing minimal effort in training, displaying a negative attitude when sitting on the bench, or refusing to execute the coaching staff’s tactical instructions.
  • Disrespect and team conflict: Differences of opinion are normal, but open confrontation with coaches or disrupting team culture will not be tolerated by any coaching staff.

Doping, alcohol, and campus policy violations

US universities and governing bodies (NCAA, NAIA, NJCAA) strictly enforce a student code of conduct. Violations often result in immediate scholarship revocation:

  • Performance-enhancing drugs and banned substances: A positive drug test almost always leads to immediate suspension and loss of your scholarship.
  • Alcohol and drug incidents: Offenses involving underage drinking (under age 21 in the US) or drug use on campus.
  • Academic dishonesty: Cheating, plagiarism, or submitting work completed by third parties.

Academic failure and loss of eligibility

To represent your university in competition, you must maintain academic eligibility. If your grade point average (GPA) drops below the required threshold or you fail to complete enough credit hours, governing bodies will bar you from competing. (Read here how to convert your grades to the US GPA scale).

Voluntarily quitting the team

If you choose to walk away from your sport, the university is no longer required to fund your athletic scholarship. Never sign a ‘Voluntary Withdrawal Form’ on campus without consulting us first. Signing this document officially waives your scholarship rights and limits our ability to advocate for you legally.

Entering the Transfer Portal

If you decide to transfer to another university (or explore your options via the NCAA Transfer Portal), your current coach is permitted to reallocate your scholarship at the end of your contract term. You will then negotiate a new financial package with your destination school.

What happens if you suffer a serious injury?

A major concern for incoming student-athletes is: “What happens if I tear my ACL in my first month?”

The rule is clear: You do NOT lose your athletic scholarship due to a sports injury. Governing association regulations explicitly protect athletes in these scenarios.

If an athlete sustains an injury—such as tearing knee ligaments during pre-season practice—their scholarship remains fully intact for the entire contract year.

Your role on the team may temporarily shift: instead of competing on the field, you will focus on rehabilitation, support the coaching staff with video analysis or team duties, and keep your academics on track.

How Made Scholarships protects you if your scholarship is threatened

Our support does not end once you arrive on campus. You are never left to navigate challenges alone.

If a dispute arises with your coaching staff or your scholarship renewal is threatened, we step in with the following actions:

  1. Direct mediation with the coach: Conflicts often stem from miscommunication or cultural differences. We act as an independent mediator to resolve issues before formal decisions are finalized.
  2. Support during the formal appeal process: If a school intends to reduce or cancel a scholarship, they are legally required to grant you an appeal hearing. This hearing is reviewed by an independent university committee—not the athletic department. We help you assemble evidence and draft your appeal documentation.
  3. Transfer Portal guidance: If the relationship with your current program becomes unsalvageable, we assist you with transitioning to another US university via the Transfer Portal to continue your college sports career.

Core rules to guarantee you keep your athletic scholarship

Maintaining your scholarship is largely within your own control. Follow these essential guidelines:

  1. Prioritize your academics: Maintaining a strong GPA ensures athletic eligibility and unlocks academic scholarships that can be stacked with your athletic aid.
  2. Be accountable and dependable: Arrive early, demonstrate a strong work ethic, and maintain a constructive mindset, even when you aren’t in the starting lineup.
  3. Communicate proactively: If you struggle academically or face personal challenges, inform your academic advisor or reach out to us immediately.
  4. Maintain visa compliance: Stay enrolled in a full-time course load (typically a minimum of 12 credit hours per semester) and do not accept unauthorized off-campus employment to keep your F-1 student visa status valid. (Read more about working in the US as an international student).

Frequently asked questions

Can an athletic scholarship be increased over time?
Yes! If you perform exceptionally well athletically and academically during your first year, a coach can choose to increase a partial scholarship to a full scholarship for your subsequent years.
What happens to my scholarship if the head coach leaves?
Your scholarship agreement is executed with the university's financial department, not the coach individually. If your head coach leaves or is replaced, your scholarship contract remains legally valid for its agreed-upon term.
Is an athletic scholarship guaranteed for 4 years?
While some Division 1 programs offer multi-year agreements, most athletic scholarships are renewed annually. As long as you remain in good academic and disciplinary standing, annual renewal is a standard procedure.
