Imba Makumbe

Personal Information

Imba Makumbe is a bilingual student-athlete born in 2009 and living in Amstelveen, just south of Amsterdam. She comes from a highly athletic and bicultural family with Zambian and Dutch roots and was raised speaking both English and Dutch. Her parents are physical education teachers, and her older sister also shares a strong passion for sports.

Imba is currently in her sophomore year of high school at the highest academic level in the Netherlands (VWO – pre-university track) and is on track to graduate in 2027. Her curriculum includes Dutch, English, Spanish, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Geography, Sports Management, Arts & Culture, and Societal Sciences. She plans to take the SAT and TOEFL in the spring of 2026 in preparation for her academic and athletic journey in the United States.

Outside of sports, Imba enjoys spending time with friends, shopping, going to the theater, and watching movies.

Athletic Information

Imba began playing field hockey at the age of four and has consistently competed in the first teams of her age group. She is known for her strong technical skills, excellent field vision, and natural leadership qualities. Initially playing as a defender (voorstopper), Imba now plays primarily as a midfielder, where her ability to organize the defense and deliver precise, strategic passes makes her an essential part of her team. She is particularly skilled in executing drag flicks and is frequently selected as team captain for her leadership on and off the field.

During the 2024–2025 season, Imba played for AMVJ’s U16 first team, which competes at the sub-top level—the second-highest national level in her age category. To further challenge herself, she also debuted for AMVJ’s second women’s team, competing in the Reserve Overgangsklasse, and represented her high school in regional tournaments.

In the 2025–2026 season, Imba transferred to HC Alliance, a club known for its strong youth program and higher level of competition. She joined the U18 first team, a year above her age group, demonstrating the club’s confidence in her ability to compete and excel in a more demanding, high-performance environment. She plays at the national U-18 level in the Netherlands.
