Personal and academic information 

 

Savini Jayasuriya is an 18-year-old girl from Colombo, Sri Lanka. She is a very athletic person and besides tennis was also an active member of her school’s swimming, athletics, and rowing teams. In addition, she is an eloquent speaker having completed grade 8 of Trinity College of London Performing Text Examinations, scoring Distinctions in 7 years, and placing 2nd in the country in the 7th Grade.

 

Savini also excels in the field of academics having won several prizes for being the top student in her class as well as a memorial prize for diligence in academics and sports. She achieved 8 A grades in the G.C.E Ordinary Level Examination and 4 A grades in her Edexcel International Advanced Subsidiary Level examination with an average of 94% for Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Economics. She is expected to graduate in January 2022.

 

Above all, Savini is a caring and empathetic human being who uses her spare time to organize projects that provide donations for elders, fun activity days for orphans, and suicide awareness programs for teenagers. She even utilized her talents in the field of painting to raise funds to purchase monitors and medicine for the pediatric ward of the National Cancer Hospital and provide computers to students in underdeveloped schools. While in school, Savini was a prefect, a mediator, and took care of a special needs student with down syndrome from year 1 until the end of her school career. Savini is an ambitious tennis player who puts in the needed hard work. Yet, despite her rigorous training program, she also volunteered as an assistant tennis coach to help the Under-10 Junior National Tennis Squad.

 

Savini is scheduled to sit the Edexcel International Advanced Level Exam, SAT, and TOEFL in the fall of 2021. Thereafter, she would love to play college tennis in the USA while excelling in her tertiary education.

 

Athletic Achievements

 

Savini started playing tennis at the age of five following in her older brother’s footprints. She is an aggressive baseliner who takes every opportunity to play offensive by dominating with her forehand. Her strong footwork and mental strength saw her qualify as a member of the junior national team that represented Sri Lanka at the World Junior Tennis Tournament at the age of 13. Ever since, she has been a permanent fixture of the national tennis squad, where she trains 5 days a week.

 

She represented Sri Lanka at the Junior Federation Cup in 2017 and 2018, the Federation Cup in 2018 and 2019, and the Asian Games in 2018. She then went on to represent Sri Lanka at the South Asian Games in 2019 where she won a Silver Medal and won the 50th Maldivian Nationals Women’s Singles and Doubles title in 2019. 

 

She won her first Women’s Open Singles title at the SSC Open Tennis Championship and followed it by winning her first National Women’s Open Singles title in 2021. Savini is also an Under-16 and Under-18 Girl’s National Singles Champion. Being a team player who loves sharing the court with her doubles partner, she won the Girl’s Under-14 Doubles title in the Qatar Asian Junior Tennis Championship in 2016 and placed 1st in the Singles and 2nd in the Doubles in the Under-14 ATF held in Colombo in 2016. She won her first National Women’s Open Doubles title in 2018 and repeated it by winning the title in 2020 and 2021. 

 

While playing for her country, Savini was also a member of her school tennis team since 2014; the team that was crowned Champions in the All-Island Under-19 Inter-School Tennis Tournament in 2019 with Savini winning the Best Tennis Player Award.

 

Savani is currently ranked #1 in the national open singels ranking and #2 in national open doubles ranking of Sri Lanka
