Personal and Academic Information

Gijs is a 18-year old boy from Hollandsche Rading, The Netherlands. He is a motivated, enthusiastic and very social individual who likes to spend time with his friends.

Besides tennis he is also interested in others sports and he played soccer until the summer of 2016. He has been a goalkeeper almost his whole career, but he also played as a field player in his last year. Despite of his passion and love for soccer Gijs decided to focus completely on his tennis career when he made the decision to go to play college tennis in the USA.

Gijs graduated high school at the highest level (VWO) with a 3.2 GPA in June of 2018. He achieved a total score of 1170 on his SAT test and scored an 80 on his TOEFL test.

Playing college tennis in America has been a dream for Gijs since he heard about it. Multiple players at his tennis club have played college tennis and they motivated him to train harder and push himself to prepare himself as best as possible to go to America in an excellent shape.

Athletic Information

Gijs started playing tennis in his hometown Hollandsche Rading at the age of 6. At the age of 12 he made the move to TC Bilthoven which is a very big and well-known club in the Province Utrecht. Since then he started playing tennis more intensively and has been training for at least three times a week with good players on a high level.

Gijs is a tall, physically very strong (6’5 ft, 198 lbs) right-handed player who loves to play aggressive and come to the net whenever he gets the opportunity. When the situation requires he also can be patient and he can easily alternate heavy topspin with a slice backhand or dropshot. His biggest weapons are his big serve (often plays serve and volley) and double handed backhand.

During his Junior career Gijs played the national ranking tournaments but switched to the Men’s open tournaments at the age of 14. This summer Gijs started to play national open ranking tournaments and achieved a highest ranking of 302 in the Dutch open mens ranking. He has a projected UTR of 10.43

The past 4 years Gijs has been practicing  about 7 hours a week of tennis and about 3 times a week strength/conditional training.

Word from his coach

"I have been coaching Gijs for about 5 years now and during that time, I have seen Gijs develop as a person and player. Gijs is a very social with a positive attitude who loves to compete but also practice to train. Due to the fact he increased his hours spent on the court the last few years, his playing level increased tremendously.

This year Gijs has taken the next step and obtained his first Dutch national open men's ranking. At the moment he has a category 3 rating but I expect him to become a category 2 player in the near future.

Gijs is an aggressive player with a strong backhand, good service and a good net game. In addition, he has a great work ethic and is mentally strong what helps him a lot during matches."
