Personal and Academic Information

Sophie is a 17 years old girl born in Santa Cruz, Bolivia (South America). At the age of 4 years she moved with her family to Mali (West-Africa), and for the past 10 years she has lived with her parents and a younger sister in Woerden, The Netherlands. Sophie has a strong passion for tennis and is very active within her tennis club. Aside from playing tennis she frequently helps to organize activities for the youngest children of her club and enjoys the responsibility of doing small administrative duties.  In 2011 Sophie graduated from high school (HAVO) and she is scheduled to take the TOEFL test in March and SAT test in May 2012. 

Sophie sees college tennis as an opportunity to not only raise the level of her game, but also to obtain an excellent education combined with  a valuable personal  international experience. 

Athletic Information

Sophie received her first tennis lessons at the age of 4 under the guidance of the national champion of Mali. After moving to Holland in 2002 she became a member of T.V. VEP (Tennis association VEP in Woerden). Within one year of joining the Tennis Association she was selected to participate in ‘Youth Plan Woerden’. This is an affiliation of six tennis clubs which provide training opportunities for select and talented players under the age of 18. Sophie has been playing for Youth Plan Woerden for 7 years. In 2009she was selected to play with the senior selection ‘All Woerden’ and continues to participate in this selection to this date. 

Sophie loves playing matches and challenging strong opponents. This is where she has gained valuable game experience and improved her game immensely. In the short time she has been playing tennis she has won 15 singles and 12 doubles titles in junior tournaments and 3 singels titles and 5 double titles in open tournaments.

In 2008 and 2009 Sophie was selected to participate in the World Sports Festival in Vienna (Austria). In 2008 Sophie was the winner in the category girls under 14, both singles and doubles. Sophie  represented Youth Plan Woerden several times in an international exchange program with the Tennis Association in Zamberk, Czech Republic.

Sophie is a strong, hard-working player and has never suffered any injuries. She is a left-handed all round player. She is comfortable playing aggressively from the baseline where she is able to take full advantage of her solid play.
