Personal and Academic Information

Bernard is  a 16-year-old boy that lives in Vries, a small village near Groningen in the north of The Netherlands, together with his parents and two older brothers. Ever since he was little he had a big passion for tennis. Bernard is currently a junior in high school and he will graduate at the highest level of study in the Netherlands in June 2013. He is planning on taking his SAT and TOEFL test in the Spring of 2012. Upon completion of these exams, he will be eligible to compete in both NCAA and NAIA.

Athletic Information

Bernard started to play tennis at the age of 6. Throughout his junior career he has always been in the top 20 of his age group until under 14. Despite an elbow injury that prevented him from playing a lot of tournaments, Bernard managed to reach a top 10 national ranking in the age group 16 and under. Besides playing the junior tournaments he also played some open tournaments resulting in national open ranking of 98 which is the second best ranking of the players in his age group

The big improvement in his level came after the recovery from his injury in October 2010. He started to train a lot harder and in combination with the physical-training he is stronger and fitter than ever. His weekly practice schedule consists of six times a week weight training and conditioning and eight times a week tennis training.

Bernard’s biggest weapons are his serve and his forehand. He has a very aggressive baseline game and he will take every opportunity he gets to go to the net and  finish the point with a volley. His backhand is very solid and he mixes it up with spin and slice in order to disrupt his opponents rhythm.
