Personal and Academic Information

Shannon is 17 years old and is the youngest of two girls. She lives in Amstelveen, The Netherlands, with her parents and sister. As her mother is American, Shannon grew up in a bi-lingual household and speaks both Dutch and English as a native. Her frequent visits to America to spend time with family and friends and to see the country have inspired Shannon with the desire to play hockey and study in the US. This is a perfect opportunity for Shannon to further her dream to one day represent the USA as a member of the Olympic field hockey team.

Shannon is a sports lover and has played field hockey since 6 years of age. In addition to hockey, Shannon is a great lover of water sports. She is a strong swimmer and an avid sailor and surfer (both wave and wind). Shannon has volunteered as an instructor at our local sailing club since 2010. In 2012, she began as an assistant instructor at a CWO accredited sailing school and in 2013 achieved her CWO certification to teach sailing at international level. In the summers of 2012 & 2013, Shannon spent the better part of her summer as a combination of sailing instructor and camp leader at the Vinkeveen Sailing School. She not only has a great love for sailing but also teaching others. She really valued the opportunity to spend time 24-7 with a group of young kids, teaching them more than sailing, helping them grow as individuals.

Shannon has also coached junior teams in 2011 and 2012. This gave her an opportunity to teach young players basic hockey techniques as well as how to work together as a team.

Shannon is attending the highest level of education in The Netherlands (VWO) and is expected to graduate in June 2014. Her subject focus is Sciences and Higher Math. Her favorite subject is Physics and in 2012, she won a competition to build a car, powered by a single brick, to travel a set distance as quickly as possible.

She also really likes to make music. She plays guitar, bass guitar and ukulele. In 2011, she won the school Battle of the Bands competition in which she and her classmates formed a band: One 2 Many, wrote a song, created and executed a marketing plan, performed live on stage (
Shannon’s role in the project, Manager and Bass Player, were instrumental to the success of this endeavor.

Shannon took her SAT test in November and is scheduled to retake it in January to improve her score.
