Mirjam is an athletic girl who grew up in a small city called Muiderberg (nearby Amsterdam) with her parents and her three sisters, including her twin Marleen. She has visited California and the Rocky Mountains in the United States, which she enjoyed very much.
Mirjam loves sports. When she was little she did horseback riding, tennis and gymnastics, as well as played the clarinet. After a while she began to play hockey and loved it from the first moment. When she was 15 she played for the first senior team of her club next to playing for her own team. In the same year, she was also selected for the school hockey team. With that team she and her sister Marleen reached to the semi-finals of the National Shell school hockey competition. As a result, they went to Barcelona for an international tournament (Los Reyes).
With her junior team as well as with the first senior team of Muiderberg, she became champion. As a result of their performance in the school team, Mirjam and Marleen were invited to join Gooische, one of the eldest Hockeyclubs in the Netherlands, at the age of 16. In their first season, they played both indoor and outdoor hockey at the national level and competed until the last day for the title.
This year both Mirjam and her sister will play for the first senior team of Gooische that competes for the championship in the first class in the Netherlands.
Both Mirjam and her twin sister are dedicated team players. They are both midfielders; Marleen usually plays on the left side and Mirjam on the right side. While they can easily replace each other, they play their best as a couple. Mirjam is a fighter with good technique and is quick on her feet, but her biggest strength is that she is a real team player that brings the best out of herself and her teammates.
Mirjam has graduated high school at the highest academic level in the Netherlands at Willem de Zwijger College. As of September 2011, she is studying economics (bedrijfskunde) at the University of Amsterdam (Vrije Universiteit). Mirjam wants to transfer to a american university in the fall of 2012.
