Personal Information

Marleen has lived her entire life in Muiderberg, a small village near Amsterdam. She has three sisters including her twin, Mirjam. Marleen and Mirjiam grew up playing hockey together and have already travelled quite a bit in their life and have been to the United States several times. Marleen loves experiencing new cultures and communicating with different kinds of people.

Athletic Information

Marleen has always been into sports. When she was younger she played tennis, did horseback riding and gymnastics. At the age of 10, she started playing hockey at the local club MHC Muiderberg. She loved it, and when she was 15 she played for the first senior team of her club while also playing on her own team. In the same year she was also selected for the school hockey team, with which she reached to the semi-finals of the National Shell school hockey competition. As a result, she went to Barcelona for an international tournament (Los Reyes).

With her junior team as well as with the first senior team of Muiderberg, she became champion. As a result of their performance in the school team, Marleen and Mirjam were invited to join Gooische, one of the eldest Hockeyclubs in the Netherlands, at the age of 16. In their first season, they played both indoor and outdoor hockey at the national level and competed until the last day for the title.

This year both Marleen and her sister will play for the first senior team of Gooische that competes for the championship in the first class in the Netherlands.

Both Marleen and her twin sister are dedicated team players. They are both midfielders; Marleen usually plays on the left side and Mirjam on the right side. While they can easily replace each other, they play their best as a couple. Marleen is a fighter with good technique and is quick on her feet, but her biggest strength is that she is a real team player that brings the best out of herself and her teammates.

Academic Information

Marleen obtained her high school diploma in Summer 2011. This diploma represents the highest high school academic level in the Netherlands. As of September 2011, she is studying Psychology at the University of Amsterdam (Vrije Universiteit). Marleen wants to transfer to a american university in the fall of 2012.
